Imuin E00.02

In this entry we’re going to generate one or more of our known settlements. This particular process has always been a challenge for me so I’m going to break this down into smaller steps.

  1. Determine which of the starting settlements this process relates to.
  2. Properties
    • Name
    • Racial demographics
    • Government
    • Population
    • Economy
    • Defence
  3. Map
    • General map layout
    • Districts

There will no doubt be more that’s what I’ll start with for now.

Rolling to determine the settlement being generated gives city located at 09,23.

Now a name. Fantasy Name Generator to the rescue. Sores is the name selected.

Now what are the racial demographics. I’m going to use Kasson’s Random Town Generator for this element.

Here are the initial demographic results: Halfling (68%), Human (23%), Dwarf (4%), Elf (2%), Gnome (1%), Half-Elf (1%), Half-Orc (1%)

I’m modifying these so when I generate an NPC in this town, the main races are all possible. Here are the results.

RacePercentage
Halfling50
Human23
Half-Elf5
Dwarf4
Other*2
Aasimar2
Dragonborn2
Elf2
Gnome2
Goliath2
Half-Orc2
Tabaxi2
Tiefling2

Other means either pick or roll for a more exotic race like tortle, orc, minotaur, leonin, etc. Here is the resultant roll table I’ll use for generating NPCs in this town.

RaceRoll
Halfling1-50
Human51-73
Half-Elf74-78
Dwarf79-82
Aasimar83-84
Dragonborn85-86
Elf87-88
Gnome89-90
Goliath91-92
Half-Orc93-94
Tabaxi95-96
Tiefling97-98
Other*99-100

Ok next, Government. I’ll use Dungeon Master’s Guide table for Forms of Government. D100 = 100. A theocracy. Interesting. I haven’t considered a pantheon for this world as yet. At this point I’ll continue with the classic Forgotten Realms pantheon. Because it’s a polytheistic pantheon, I’m going to say it’s a council of high priests that rule the city. Rolling a d20 to determine the number of council members. 11. Ok I’ll review the list of deities from the Dungeon Master’s Guide and pick 11 major ones whose high priests will form the governing council for Sores. Herte is the result:

Chauntea
Deneir
Gond
Helm
Ilmater
Kelemvor
Lathandar
Tymora
Tyr
Umberlee
Waukeen

Let’s work out the general status of the divine council via the DMG’s Ruler’s Status table. D20 = Respected, fair and just. Nice.

Next is population. The DMG says up to 25,000. So I’m going to say it simply is 25,000.

Next economy.  Well lets see. Looking at it’s location it’s going to be a substantial trading town being one of the big 3 cities on the continent plus a port. It also has an excellent lumber supply from the surrounding forest. It is dominated by halflings who are known for their food, love of agriculture and the open road. I’ll say it is considered the cultural capital of the Imuin. People come from all over the continent to see it’s plays and shows.

Defense wise I’m not sure of a resource to roll on. Using omgm.rocks I get heavy stone wall with walkway.

Ok that gives me the base details. This took far longer to generate than I would have thought so going forward I think I’ll use a combination of Kassoons, OMGM and Donjon to generate the template for my town then season to taste.

Now it’s to make a map. Just before we do so though we need to know what is the spread of the districts. Being ruled by a theocracy we know it has a large temple district. Will also need it’s council chambers/government district. It needs a large cultural or arts district for that reputation. We also need a large mercantile/trading district. This space for smaller craftsman district,  we needs a docks section and multiple tiers of residential areas from nobles to poor. Summarising that;

  • Government
  • Temple
  • Cultural/Arts
  • Market
  • Crafts
  • Noble residence
  • Middle class residence
  • Poor residence
  • Docks

Ok let’s name these places. Would you believe after naming most of these place I came across City District Name Generator. Is there nothing that site has no name for;

DistrictName
Temple/Government*Divine Quarter
ArtsSune’s Sconce
MarketCoin Quarter
CraftsMaker’s Place
NobleGold road
Middle classSilver Place
PoorCopper Quarter
DocksSalt Side

Thinking on it I decided to incorporate the government district within the temple district. Ok now that I have my district names it’s time to generate a map. Using Watabou’s awesome Medieval Fantasy City Generator I get this.

Now with a bit of GIMP work, let’s make turn this into Sores.

Quick progress screenshot with planned districts.

And here is the end product.

Looks good I think. Here’s the summary.
